Greetings

Neutral to formal
 
 


A: Hi! / Hello! How are you?

 

B: Fine, thank you. / Fine, thanks.

 

... How are you? / How about you?/
How do you feel?/ How do you feel today?

 

Less formal


 





A: Hi! / Hey. How are things? / How is it going? / How are you doing?

B: Pretty good / OK / All right / I'm good... How about you?


We sometimes use these greetings at different times of the day:

Good morning
Buenos días

Good afternoon
Buenas tardes

Good evening
Buenas noches

 

When we meet someone for the first time, we can say:
 
 



Nice to meet you.

How do you do? / Pleased to meet you. (Formal)


In Spanish : Muchos gusto / Un placer conocerlo.

Farewells

 

 

  • Good-bye (neutral to formal)
  • Take care. / So long. /Bye. / See you. (less formal)
  • It is good to see you (greeting), It was good to see you (farewell) / Nice to see you.
  • Nice meeting you. (to say good-bye to someone you have just met for the first time)
  • Good night. (to say good-bye late at night or if one or both of you is going to bed)
  • Have a nice (good) day / evening / weekend. (to say good-bye to a friend or to a customer in a store)

Special Expressions

 
 

Excuse me to get someone's attention.

Excuse me/I am sorry to say you are sorry.

Excuse me? /to ask someone to repeat what he or she said.

Pardon me? / to ask someone to repeat what he or she said.

I beg your pardon? / to ask someone to repeat what he or she said.

Good luck! To wish someone success in: an exam, a competition, etc.

Congratulations! To praise someone for something they did. (Example: an event, a test, a new work, etc.)

Happy birthday! To wish someone well on his or her birthday.
